Mosaic is the art of forming one cohesive image from several tiny pieces of glass, stone, or different materials. You may admire the detailed beauty of mosaic artworks and furniture pieces today, but do you ever think about how long this art style has persisted?
Mosaic Art in Ancient Civilizations
The first known example of the mosaic art form can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia. Mesopotamia's architecture was exquisitely intricate and colorful, and artists could experiment with these materials to create masterful, mosaic buildings. One such example is the Ishtar Gate, which opened up to the ancient city of Babylon. At that time, King Nebuchadnezzar II reigned. He not only had the Ishtar Gate erected, but also had thousands of workers build and upkeep the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, for his favorite wife.

Other ancient civilizations carried on with mosaic art of their own. The Greeks and Romans created artworks of gods and goddesses or daily scenes, as well as mosaic buildings and walkways. Islamic mosaics primarily consisted of elaborate geometric designs. Mosaic art could almost be seen as a status symbol since it was such a process. While the Middle Ages saw many churches and buildings adorned with mosaic patterns, mosaic art slowly fell out of favor and was rarely seen during the Renaissance.
Nevertheless, today we see mosaics in several different settings. From furniture to walkways to buildings, mosaic art continues to persist. Though it can be time-consuming, the final product is worth it. Try your hand at creating mosaics using the instructions below!

Picture Frame/Wooden Coaster/Canvas for Mosaic
Sponge
Water
Disposable Gloves
Paper Towels
Step 1:

Make your design with the mosaic tiles before gluing anything down.
Step 2:
Using the multi-surface glue, glue your design onto a picture frame, coaster, canvas, or any surface you want to feature your mosaic. Make sure you're leaving a little bit of space in between each tile. These spaces will be filled with the grout. Let the design dry.

Step 3:
After the glue has dried, put on your disposable gloves. Use your fingers to place the pre-mixed grout onto your design. Spread out the grout across your design so it is all covered.
Step 4:
Dip your sponge in the water, and wipe off the grout from the surface of your design. Keep wiping off the grout from the surface until it is gone. Use paper towels if needed.
Step 5:
Allow the grout to dry and harden. You are left with your own mosaic work of art
